A VISUAL GUIDE THROUGH PRADO MUSEUM
VENUS AND ADONIS
ROOM 026
Floor 1
Paolo Veronesse
You are looking at a guide about trust. In these paintings, the main idea is how humans created classical myths to explain or compare them with real life. The goal is to teach a moral lesson to the viewer.
This specific painting, "Venus and Adonis", shows us that even though gods can change the reality rules and transform the world, they still act based on desire and passion. They are a reflection of human beings. Love controls even the gods, but just like with humans, it often leads to misfortune.
Did you know that...
Curiosity 1
There are several characters in this painting, including Cupid, who is shown here without wings but with his quiver of golden arrows. He caused this romance by hitting Venus with one of his arrows. In the painting, Cupid is trying to hold back Adonis's restless dog while the other dog sleeps. Cupid is trying to prevent the dog from waking up and leading Adonis to his death, trying to delay the inevitable.
Curiosity 2
This scene of mortality reminds many of Michelangelo’s famous sculpture, the Pietà. Adonis looks sleepy in Venus's lap, almost as if he were already dead. The artist took creative liberties with the story, changing the original position of the characters described in ancient texts to make the scene more dramatic.
Curiosity 3
A very interesting detail is the fan held by Venus. This fan, typical of young women in the 16th century, has a specific embroidery: an Anemone flower. This is a foreshadowing of the future, as the anemone is the flower that, according to myth, grew from the blood of Adonis after his tragic death.

"The painting Venus and Adonis by Paolo Veronese shows a boy, a man, a woman, and two dogs. The boy is naked and hugs a dog. And the woman is also naked and holds the man, who looks dead. They are in a forest surrounded by trees and nature. The scene shows love and sadness at the same time. This painting is 123 centimeters tall and 174 centimeters wide. It is painted with oil on canvas. Veronese used soft and natural light, and he used warm colors for the people and cold colors for the background. He also used perspective to make the scene look deep and real. The main focus is on Venus and Adonis. The lines are soft and the background looks calm. Paolo Veronese, born in 1528 and died in 1588, was an Italian painter from Verona. He was one of the most important artists of the Renaissance in Venice. His paintings are famous for their bright colors and beautiful detail. Some of his works are The Wedding at Cana and The Adoration of the Magi. The painting belongs to the Venetian Renaissance. This style is known for its use of light, color, and beauty. The theme is mythological. It tells the story of Venus and Adonis from a Roman poem by Ovid. Venus, the goddess of love, cries because her lover Adonis was killed by a wild bear. In the Renaissance, artists liked to paint stories from ancient myths to show human emotions. Veronese was a very important painter in the history of art. His way of using light and color influenced other artists like Rubens, Velázquez, and Delacroix. His paintings also inspired the Baroque style. Venus and Adonis is well preserved and have been restored to protect its colors. It is still in good condition and it is considered a very beautiful example of Venetian art."
